Developing the Pilot Episode (Synchronous E-Learning)

OVERVIEW

In this project-based workshop, participants will build on a series bible and outline to write a complete pilot episode of TV or web series - drama, comedy, action, or horror. Participants will learn and work on components of the creative process and acquire a structured approach that will help produce a pitch-ready script. Topics covered in this workshop include setting up scenes and sequences, moving the story with character action and dialogue, structuring and outlining episodes. By the end of this workshop, participants would have written a complete pilot episode and be ready to start on the next episode.

TRAINER

Dr Lee Chee Keng brings with him rich experience in conceptualising, writing, and teaching TV drama writing and has worked alongside numerous renowned TV drama writers in China. He is a long-time associate of Zhang Xiaofeng Writing Studio and has worked on works such as Seeking Nirvana at Shaolin (2016) and Pushing Hands (2019). After graduating from the National University of Singapore and the renowned Central Academy of Drama (Beijing), Chee Keng dedicated his time and energy to writing and teaching. He has taught at the Shanghai Theatre Academy, Yale-NUS College, the National University of Singapore, and the Nanyang Technological University.

  • Academic Requirement: Obtain Pass Grade in GCE O-Level subjects including at least B4 for English (or IELTS overall band score 6.5 and above or equivalent) and 2 other subjects or equivalent

  • At least 2 year working experience in any industry

  • Applicants may be called for interview at the discretion of Singapore Media Academy

OVERVIEW

This practice-based workshop will guide the participants through the processes of creating characters, designing character's journeys and dynamics, developing plotlines, and structuring the narrative experience by the audience. By the end of this workshop, the participants would have formulated a show bible that will include character biographies, story arcs, episode stories, story world, etc. The show bible will serve as an important tool to help them communicate their creative vision and transform it into a script.
